Former Rep. Flanagan: Paul Ryan Is Too Cozy With K Street

The Senate is packed with "strengthless people" and House Speaker Paul Ryan relies too much on K Street, former Rep. Michael Patrick Flanagan told Newsmax TV.

Flanagan told host J.D. Hayworth that Ryan is getting his bills from lobbyists, which presents an issue for the Senate once legislation moves over to that chamber.

"Paul Ryan's bills, written by K Street, have absolutely none of that [broad support], and so it gets to the Senate and these senators have to suddenly find strength on their own to do it, and they're frankly strengthless people," Flanagan said.

"They don't have any capacity to do the right thing. They only have the capacity to do the political thing, to make sure that they stay in their jobs and that they don't offend anybody in this town too deeply."

That, Flanagan said, is causing "crazy votes" in the Senate — such as Sen. John McCain's no vote on a skinny Obamacare repeal last month.

"The work has to be done in regular order in the House if you expect the Senate to follow," Flanagan said. "Newt [Gingrich] found this to be true with Bob Dole in the Senate. This is always true, and I can go on here for 10 minutes, but I won't, and I think that's really the problem."

Flanagan later added Washington needs a new crop of lawmakers who are less worried about politics and more concerned with doing what is right to run the government.

"We need better, higher-quality people running for office, and I don't know how we get that done in this age, but in an age where we've ended privacy, in any age where everybody knows everything about everybody, there's a whole bunch of people who don't want their lives on display as completely as they are today, and so they avoid the public life, and we've got to find a way to work around that," he said.
