Jill Tahmooressi: Hopeful Testimony Will Put Son in Spotlight

By    |   Monday, 29 Sep 2014 02:32 PM

The mother of Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who is currently held in a Mexican prison on weapons charges, will testify before a congressional committee on Wednesday with the hope that it will bring more national attention to her son's plight.

"I certainly am anticipating that it will bring awareness to more folks, including our elected officials," Jill Tahmooressi told J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Monday.

Tahmooressi, 26, was arrested in Mexico at a border checkpoint in Tijuana in March when he crossed the border after he apparently made a wrong turn and was found with three loaded weapons in his vehicle, which he owns legally in the United States.

The jailed marine served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and currently suffers from post traumatic stress disorder.

Jill Tahmooressi explained that he "is a current marine under contract until 2016 who accidentally crossed the border, as documented by the 911 tape." .

However, she explained that "there is not much expedition of this case going on because the 911 tape is stuck in a bureaucratic department in Mexico."

"I hope to be able to explain to the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, that Andrew is battling PTSD on his own, he fought for us in Afghanistan twice and he has been abandoned fighting this new mental battle alone," she said.

Tahmooressi was scheduled to have his third psychological evaluation in Mexico Monday.

"What's frustrating is a legitimate one was done by the psychiatrist at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City on April 14 that supposedly was given to the judge after it was translated," she explained.

"Six months later, a prosecutor is sending a Mexican psychiatrist to evaluate foreign combat related PTSD, which they do not have the expertise to do," she said.

"I am grateful that one more evaluation will be done, but this will be the third one," she added.
