Mark McKinnon: Now in Power, GOP Shows Inability to Govern

The current crop of Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill have yet to show the nation they have the ability to govern, Mark McKinnon, the former media adviser to President George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain, tells Newsmax TV.

"What's frustrating for me is that at some point Republicans have proven well that they're good at opposing stuff. That they're good at being the party out of power," McKinnon said Tuesday on "America Talks Live" with Bill Tucker.

"They have yet to prove, in this current crop, that they have any ability to govern and to get stuff done."

Case in point, said McKinnon is President Donald Trump's "strategic decision" to try to replace the Affordable Care Act by working only with Republicans.

"I worked for George W. Bush. He was a strong Republican but he realized that once you're president you got to get some of the other guys to get stuff done," said McKinnon, executive producer and co-host of Showtime's "The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth."

"We went over and met with [Democratic Sen.] Ted Kennedy, an arch rival, to get an education bill done. The problem with healthcare is that it's so complicated and they felt they need to get it done so quickly.

"They did it in a way that basically told Democrats to take a hike and they told them to take a hike from day one."

As a result, it is going to be difficult for the GOP to reverse that alienation on issues like infrastructure, McKinnon told Tucker.

"I just think that the Democrats now are just going to say 'well, screw it. We're not going to have them on anything," he said.

McKinnon said it is "increasingly unlikely" the GOP's "American Health Care Act" will ever see the light of day.

"What's so amazing is that the Republicans have campaigned furiously and almost exclusively on the whole issue of repealing and replacing Obamacare and then they got the keys to the car and they can't find the ignition. It's just mind-boggling," he said.

"This week it appeared like there was some progress and that the Freedom Caucus came aboard because they got a provision on the bill that basically lets states opt out of certain provisions like pre-existing conditions.

"And then Donald Trump does an interview yesterday and says I guarantee pre-existing conditions are going to be guaranteed. Either he doesn't know what's in the bill or he knows what's in the bill and he's purposely blowing the thing up again. But it's just hard to see where this thing lands now."
