Marine Sniper Details 'Shock Factor' of Taking Down Insurgents

Working as a U.S. Marine sniper is incredibly dangerous and always potentially lethal, says Jack Coughlin, who patrolled the war-torn streets of Iraq in one of his tours of duty.

Coughlin co-authored with John Bruning the new book, "Shock Factor: American Snipers in the War on Terror," published by St. Martin's Press.

"Basically, what the Shock Factor is, is imagine you're a group of five insurgents walking down the street, looking to do some bad things," Coughlin said in an interview with "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Your buddy in the back gets shot, you look around, and you don't know what happened. Another guy goes down, you don't even hear the bullets being fired, and you hide behind a car.

"Now, you're wondering where the bullets are coming from ... You get up and run willing to get shot down. Why did you run from the cover? Because you were a shock factor. It's the shock that put you in the moment and makes you lose all control of your thoughts."

Coughlin's fellow Marine Jason Delgado, who grew up on the mean streets of New York, added:

"New York was a quite different place back when I was growing up. Drugs and a lot of crime were being committed. Truthfully speaking, the Marine Corps was definitely an experience to pull me out of what, at that time, was the norm.

"[It was] definitely a rough upbringing and it made my job a lot easier because I was already used to atrocities."
