The massive People's Climate March in New York City was a leftist "rage against capitalism," according to Stephen Moore, chief economist for The Heritage Foundation.

"It’s a rage against capitalism, free-market capitalism and that's the underlining theme of all of these left wing groups," Moore said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"This is not about climate change this is not about cleaning up the environment. This is about shutting down free market capitalism and industrial progress."

More than 300,000 people paraded through midtown Manhattan in what is believed to be the largest climate-change rally in history. Marchers included actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon and former U.S. vice president Al Gore.

Moore said liberal environmental groups wrongly argue that the planet cannot co-exist with free market capitalism.

"Well, free market capitalism only creates the growth and the prosperity that we have that we can worry about these things like the rise of the ocean," he said.

"By the way, even if the United States did not exist as a nation, even if you wiped out the United States we would still — China and India, Mexico and Indonesia and all these countries are emitting so much carbon that we're inconsequential."
