LIGNET Analyst: ISIS Adapts, Gets Stronger

By    |   Monday, 06 Oct 2014 03:38 PM

Airstrikes without ground forces in Syria and Iraq are helping the Islamic State (ISIS) learn, adapt and become stronger at fighting the U.S.-led coalition — hence, the imminent fall of a Syrian town to the extremist movement's forces, says former CIA analyst Lisa Ruth.

"Unless there's a decision to go in full-fledged — and, yes, that does mean boots on the ground — we are actually allowing them to adjust and get stronger," Ruth, of the private intelligence analysis firm LIGNET, told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner on Newsmax TV Monday.

Ruth said that there is no serious "other than" strategy besides substantial combat troops for confronting the Islamic State.

"We have got to mobilize on the ground with really good intelligence supported by airstrikes," she said.

The problem is time, said Ruth, because the necessary intelligence network is not in place right now, even as ISIS continues to make territorial gains.

"They're not losing," she said of the would-be caliphate's fighters.

Reports of lone Americans joining the fight against ISIS —
apparently on their own initiative — pose both a security challenge and an intelligence opportunity to the United States, said Ruth.

While these volunteer anti-jihadists might have received tacit U.S. government approval to travel abroad and join the fight, they must also
be vetted thoroughly before they're allowed to return home, said Ruth.
