Cuccinelli to Trump: Stay Away From 'Ryancare'

President Donald Trump should move full steam ahead in repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), but steer clear of embracing House Speaker Paul Ryan's replacement healthcare proposal, Ken Cuccinelli, president of the Senate Conservatives Fund, tells Newsmax TV.

Cuccinelli said when Trump speaks before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, "we want to hear that it's going to be repealed which conservatives on Capitol Hill are already lining up to do.

"They did this once with the 2015 bill. They should just pass the same piece of legislation and then do all the things that would help our healthcare system," the former attorney general of Virginia said Tuesday to Steve Malzberg on "America Talks Live."

"[Things] like expanding health savings accounts and getting rid of the tax imbalance between you and me and businesses, between individuals and businesses, and letting people buy across stateliness increase competition, increase access to healthcare.

"That's what all these folks ran on, that's what they promised us, they've been promising us for six, seven, eight years and it's time to deliver."

But Trump must avoid embracing "Ryancare," the name he calls the health plan touted by the Wisconsin congressman.

"Paul Ryan is essentially putting in place a new entitlement in place of Obamacare. It's intended to be a massive expansion," Cuccinelli said.

"You can call it a massive expansion of Medicaid or you can just call it an entirely new entitlement program where they're going to give out money to people not paying taxes, more than what we're already doing and to cover the so-called transition from Obamacare, but it never goes away.

"For a country that's already $20 trillion in debt that doesn't strike me as a very good idea and politically if all you do is move around the chairs of the Titanic. It's still the Titanic and that's what Paul Ryan is doing right now so we obviously hope the president goes another direction starting with full and complete repeal of Obamacare."

Republicans have demanded the repeal of the ACA — or Obamacare — for years, but have provided very few concrete details of how they would replace it.

Immediate repeal of the ACA was one of Trump's signature campaign vows, but on Monday he admitted it's not as easy to do as it looks.

"Nobody knew that health care could be so complicated," the commander-in-chief said.
