Ken Blackwell: Ted Cruz Right on Target

By    |   Monday, 15 Dec 2014 02:04 PM

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's attempt to force a vote on defunding President Barack Obama's executive actions on immigration was the right move, says former Ohio state Treasurer and Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.

"Sen. Ted Cruz was right on target with his advancement of a strategy that would've stopped the president's unconstitutional power grab in its track," Blackwell, who also served as mayor of Cincinnati and undersecretary at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, told J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV on Monday.

"I hope that too much of the genie hasn't gotten out of the bottle for us to take corrective action by the end of February, but we missed an opportunity," he contends.

Cruz faced harsh criticism from both Democrats and Republicans for pushing for the vote over Obama's executive actions, which delayed the passage of the government spending bill.

The former Ohio secretary of state said he was part of an effort to fight Obama's executive action on immigration.

"Too many Republicans were complicit with the president's unconstitutional, unreasonable, unproductive immigration power grab and his granting of these privileges and work permits to illegal aliens," he explained.

At this point, the Ohio Republican said he doesn't "know if they let too much of the genie out of the bottle or they set up a context or a framework by which they will continue to be complicit — not only to the demise and against the interest of American workers — but at the obstruction and weakening of the rule of law."

"We won our independence of the nation with 3 million Americans," Blackwell said.

"Today, we are the freest, richest, most powerful nation in the world, with more than 300 million Americans."

"Immigration made us strong, powerful, and economically dynamic, but it was a rational, reasonable and legal process," he argued.

"The American fabric is part and parcel of the rule of law. If we destroy the rule of law, you destroy American democracy," he explained.

"This president has had no regard for the Constitution," he contends. "He has disarmed the rule of law, and he and his cronies have gradually changed the fabric of American democracy, and moved us from a nation that believes in limited government to one that feeds the welfare state, which feeds on American dependency."

According to Blackwell, Republicans should have pushed for a short-term spending bill, "and when the cavalry came, we in fact could've put this country back on a course of growing the economy with the Keystone pipeline and other actions."
