Kellyanne Conway: Sec. State Tillerson Will Promote 'Trump Doctrine'

President-elect Donald Trump believes what critics dismiss as a "liability" of his secretary of state pick Rex Tillerson will be an asset as the Exxon Mobil CEO promotes "the Trump Doctrine" around the globe, senior adviser Kellyanne Conway said Tuesday.

In an interview with "The Joe Pags Show" host Joe Pagliarulo on Newsmax TV, Conway praised the business and negotiating skills of Tillerson, who has come under fire for his ties with Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin.

"He's somebody who Donald Trump told me just today that when he met Rex Tillerson, he saw him as somebody who's incredibly experienced, equipped, a fellow successful businessman," she said. "And he thinks [Tillerson] brings an entire different dimension. What people want to dismiss as a liability is actually an asset."

She added Tillerson has shown "the ability to go and advance U.S. interests, our sovereignty, our security and our strength around the globe, implementing the Trump Doctrine – which of course is an 'America First Doctrine' – around the globe and that's what the secretary of state will do."

She dismissed his ties with Russia as pure business.

"Of course somebody's who's developing energy resources, he's had had dealings with Vladimir Putin, he's had some dealings with China," she added. "It's not as if they're godparents to each other's children."

Then taking a swipe at former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the alleged influence of Clinton Foundation donors, Conway added, "I imagine our new secretary of state will not be using his department as a concierge for foreign governments to come and give money."

Conway reported Trump has so far met "90 men and women from across this country and who want to help, who want to offer their advice and counsel, and some of whom will end up in his Cabinet, as senior positions in his administration, but all of whom love the country and want to add their experiences, their vision and their help to the effort."

As for her own role in or out of the administration, she said, it is still undecided, and "a decision I'm trying to make based on my personal and professional considerations."
