Petroleum Group Head: Vetoing Keystone Bill Detrimental

President Barack Obama will harm the nation's financial health — and its place as a world leader in energy — if he vetoes the Keystone XL pipeline, says Karen Moreau, executive director of the New York State Petroleum Council.

"Not only is [the project creating] 40,000 jobs, but these are really good paying jobs, family sustaining jobs," Moreau said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"We hear all about income inequality. Well our industry pays seven times the minimum wage. We hear about the war on women. Forty percent of our industry are women … surveyors, geologists, petrochemical engineers.

"Welders [are] making thousands and thousands of dollars. You don't have to go to college to get a good job in our industry and look at all those college students that can't pay their debts. This is great for so many people in this country and the American people know it."

Moreau said Obama is wrong in his belief that the pipeline would primarily be used as a conduit for Canadian oil products to be exported.

"First of all, it's not just Canadian oil, it's North Dakota, it's Montana. This is oil coming down through land owned by many farmers and other rural land owners who would love to have the benefit of what the pipeline will pay," she said.

["There are] 42,000 jobs, energy security for our nation, and it's going to go to the best refineries in the world in Houston, [with] more jobs, more Americans working, and that's what the American people want."

She said 73 percent of Americans want to see the pipeline green-lighted.

"We shouldn't be letting other nations in the Middle East all have the market share," Moreau said.

"And Russia certainly is a big oil producing nation, also a big gas producing nation, and we saw what they've done in the past when they turned the gas off to countries in Eastern Europe and the European Union.

"By exporting more of our own product, we are a free market country, we have values of liberty, we recognize the value of human rights. These countries like Russia, countries in the Middle East, they don't have that same track record."

Moreau's group represents the oil and natural gas industry and its more than 550 members.
