Pollster Zogby: No GOP Frontrunners Will Emerge Until Fall

By    |   Monday, 25 May 2015 07:14 PM

While the Republican Party is chock-full of declared and undeclared presidential candidates — so far none of them has taken the lead, veteran pollster John Zogby tells Newsmax TV.

"There are so many choices and very few that are really known on a national basis," Zogby told Rick Ungar, guest host of the Monday edition of "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"It's very hard to develop a first tier and a second tier when even the best known frontrunner is only polling nationally 12, 13 percent, that being [former Florida Gov.] Jeb Bush.

"We're taking a temperature right now and we get a sense that there's really no early runaway frontrunner."

Zogby, CEO of Zogby Analytics, believes Americans will have to wait another five months before the stronger candidates emerge.

"By October or so you'll start to see some [candidates] getting a sense that they're not competitive enough. And you'll start to see at least the flavor or two of the month pulling away a little bit," he said.

Asked by Ungar if he's getting any sense of who those flavors of the month might be, Zogby responded:

"Right now, I've been watching [Florida Sen.] Marco Rubio for a few months. He's off to a very good start. He has to sustain it, of course. Secondly … [there's Wisconsin Gov.] Scott Walker, who was doing well in the polls.

"But it remains to be seen whether or not they're flavors of the month. On the basis of a very good start, Rubio might be considered top of the first tier."

But at the age of 43, is Rubio just a tad too young to seek the White House?

"We asked it awhile back and many felt that he was too young and frankly, when I knew that he was going to be coming out, I was among the doubters," Zogby said.

"However, I saw his numbers pick up particularly among women and he addressed the issue in a Jack Kennedy, Barack Obama 2008 kind of manner with youth and vigor and hope in the American dream.

"At least, so far, he's actually making the youthfulness work for him."

Zogby believes Hillary Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner, has not yet been affected by several scandals that have emerged, including the use of private email accounts for government business while she was secretary of state and controversial donations made to the Clinton Foundation.

"Not yet, but she will be … On one hand, it's too early. On the other hand, it's early and just a steady, slow, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip …" Zogby said.
