John Sununu: Trump 'Gets Baited,' Puts 'Foot in Mouth'

President Donald Trump has made inroads in foreign policy, health care and national security but he has to learn to have a thicker skin, John Sununu, a former governor of New Hampshire and chief of staff to George H.W. Bush, told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"He's letting himself get baited into conversations about personalities instead of dueling on the subject of issues and policy," Sununu said on Newsmax's "America Talks Live" with Bill Tucker.

And Sununu added, the president must stick to his prepared agenda in his ambitious journey to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Italy and Belgium which kicked off on Friday.

"I think they've laid out a very good itinerary. I think, if you will, touching base with the three principle religions of the world whether it's in Saudi Arabia which is the keeper of the holy mosques. For the Islamic religion going to Israel and then going on to the Vatican," Sununu said.

"I think there's some symbolism there that has great value and if he does it right, if he avoids putting his foot in his mouth, it will have tremendous positive benefits for him.

"Don't trip up, if you will. Don't stray too far from the plan presentations that have been prepared. There is a line and reason to the agenda that has been prepared for the president. If he sticks to that, he'll be fine."

Sununu also weighed in on the leaks that continue to plague Trump in Washington.

"There's two kinds of leaks: one is the leaks from the inner circle and quite often those are accidental. Somebody on the real inner circle in the White House talks to a friend who talks to a friend and by the time it gets to the third friend it becomes twisted and a leak," he told Tucker.

"But the other category of leaks are the ones that are coming from career people and the travesty of those is they can pick and choose whatever half sentence they want and make something out of it. It's impossible to stop those.

"But what you got to do to deal with those is put a counter story into the press that balances that out. They've got to be understanding that they have to prepare every day to feed the press what they want the press to be writing instead of reacting to what the press and the deep state want to be writing about."

He said the management of leaks is all par for the course with being president.

"That's what it's all about. It's big league baseball. It's no longer triple A baseball. They've got to be playing big league baseball and they've got to be playing on both sides: offense and defense," Sununu said.

Sununu is the author of "The Quiet Man: The Indispensable Presidency of George H.W. Bush," published by Broadside Books.
