Sununu: Republicans Must Start Pounding Trump

The other Republican presidential candidates need to start hitting front-runner Donald Trump, former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu tells Newsmax TV, or Trump will win the nomination and lose to Democrat Hillary Clinton, who won't hold back on him.

For Trump to be stopped, Sununu said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show," Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich have to start pounding on Trump themselves instead of waiting for someone else to do it.

"And they have to do in terms of issues," he said, adding that Trump should be attacked on his positions on universal health care and foreign policy.

"They ought to be talking about the fact that this guy may have energy in his comments, but there's no substance in it and that means if and when he ever gets to Washington, he can't do anything about the things we're all angry at."

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who dropped out after Saturday's South Carolina primary, did attack Trump, but waited too late, Sununu said.

"I don't think their super PAC was managed very well. I don't think they understood the kind of a campaign they had to deal with, and I frankly don't think they were … focusing on the things that had to be focused on," he said. "They should have gone after Trump earlier, more aggressively, more factually, differentiating the positions that Trump had in contrast with the Republican Party."

If Trump is not taken on by Republicans, he will win the nomination, and Clinton will not be so quick to hold back in the general election.

"She'll make a big deal out of all of that and his inconsistency in particular," he said. "When you go after, in a presidential election, things like those inconsistencies, you begin to see people fall off."

On other issues, Sununu said:
  • He doesn't understand why the evangelical vote is going to Trump. "The guy that's putting on an act is clearly Trump, and, unfortunately, they keep buying it," he said. "This is a guy who's bragged about his sexual prowess for example, this is a guy who's going through a couple of wives. I guess he's on his third one. This is a guy who until a few months ago was pro-choice, then when he decided to run he starts saying he's pro-life. I do not understand the evangelical vote and they've got, in my opinion, a little bit of soul searching to do."
  • Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders also is holding back on attacking Clinton, and, "The only way she's going to really get pounded is after she locks up the nomination. She's got to get pounded by the Republican nominee. Unfortunately, if Trump ends up being the nominee, she's going to sneak into the presidency."
Sununu is also former chief of staff to President George H.W. Bush, and is author of "The Quiet Man: The Indispensable Presidency of George H.W. Bush."
