After the proposed Republican healthcare replacement for the Affordable Care Act is made law, those who do not buy insurance will steer clear because "it's a bad bet for them," former Gov. John Sununu, R-N.H. told Newsmax TV.

"The most important thing is to get rid of the yoke of government on the backs of young people who are being forced by fines and everything to buy insurance that they: A. don't want; and B. don't need," Sununu told host Steve Malzberg on Monday's "America Talks Live."

"At best most of them want to get some kind of a catastrophic plan that will take care of disasters, but they don't want fundamental healthcare insurance. They see themselves as healthy enough to deal with things on a pay-as-you-go basis.

"They're going to be the big statistic the Democrats are going to try and flaunt, but the bulk of the people that will be without healthcare insurance post this legislation are going to be people who choose not to be on healthcare insurance because it's a bad bet for them."

Sununu, who served as chief of staff to George H.W. Bush, is the author of "The Quiet Man: The Indispensable Presidency of George H.W. Bush," published by Broadside Books.
