Rand Paul announced his entry into the 2016 presidential race on Tuesday with all cylinders firing, according to John Fund, a Newsmax analyst and foreign affairs columnist for the National Review.

"It was a very good debut," Fund told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newmax TV, hours after the Kentucky Republican threw his hat in the ring.

"He did a very impressive thing. He clearly is under pressure on his foreign policy views and he basically repositioned himself.

"He said 'I want to defend America, I'll do anything necessary to defend America, but I don't want a nation build.'''

In nation-building, more government programs are introduced.

But Fund — author of "Obama's Enforcer: Eric Holder's Justice Department," written with Hans von Spakovsky and published by Broadside Books — added that Paul's platform does have some X-factors.

"He leaves a lot of questions as to exactly how far he would go after terrorists and what he would do about ISIS," Fund told Steve Malzberg.

"But he's taping in to a deep vein of skepticism in America when he says, 'We don't trust the government around big programs."'

Paul is the second Republican to officially declare his candidacy, following Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.
