John Fund: Democrats' Desperation Shows in 'Preposterous' Ads

Democrats are becoming desperate as the midterm elections approach, peppering the airwaves with outrageous anti-Republican ads, says Newsmax contributor John Fund.

"The commercials have just become hysterical," Fund said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"You have Mark Pryor in Arkansas blaming his opponent Congressman Tom Cotton for voting against funding that could bring the Ebola virus to light in the United States.

"At some point you have to ask yourself, who writes these ads? I call it the 'staff infection.' Consultants either do cookie-cutter ads — war on women, liberal, liberal, liberal — or when they come up with new ideas, they're preposterous."

Fund, a national affairs columnist for National Review Online, says the Democrats are going for broke because of their failing popularity.

"If you have a poor economy, foreign policy disasters everywhere, and if your president has a popularity rating of 40 percent, of course you're going to come up with anything. Anything will do, the kitchen sink and beyond," Fund said.

But whether such attack ads can spur more Americans to vote is in question, he says.

"The real question is, are you going to vote or not vote? Are you motivated to vote or not?" he said.

"People aren't happy with Obama, and those who like Obama aren't thrilled with him. So, they're not motivated to get out and vote.

"The commercials increasingly are being supplanted by other messengers, social media . . .  your friends, neighbors and relatives and what they say. So, the traditional commercial makes lots of profits for campaign consultants, but I'm not sure how many actual voters it moves anymore."
