Priest: House Will Vote on a 20-Week Abortion Ban

By    |   Monday, 26 Jan 2015 09:31 PM

A bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks will eventually get a vote in the House of Representatives, despite the measure being shelved last week because of objections from Republican women, a New York priest who supports the legislation told Newsmax TV on Monday.

The withdrawal of the bill was not a cave-in, but a step in a legislative process that will see House Republicans re-emerge with a revised ban on abortions after 20 weeks, Msgr. Jim Lisante of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa Park, N.Y., told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner.

"I think they're having a rational and sensible debate on making the best bill possible," said the Long Island pastor, author and host of "Personally Speaking," a syndicated radio program.

House Republican leaders canceled a vote last week
when confronted with a revolt by about two dozen female caucus members who said the bill would restrict some rape victims from accessing abortions.

The House instead passed a different bill outlawing federal funds for abortion coverage in health insurance — a measure that President Barack Obama has said he will veto.

Lisante said that House Republicans did send a message "that abortion has gone too far in this country" and he praised them for having an actual debate.

"The truth is, the Republican Party allows the members to be both pro-life and pro-choice," he said. "You try as a Democrat to say you're pro-life and you're going to be out of a job."

He said the dispute over exceptions to the ban should not obscure the fact that all but 2 percent of abortions in the United States are for "reasons of social convenience," not rape, incest or the health of the woman.

He acknowledged that any new ban has little chance of becoming law under Obama, who he called "the most pro-abortion president we've ever had."
