Jed Babbin: Obama Admin. 'Trying to Tie Trump's Hands' on Israel

The Obama administration is trying to tie Donald Trump's hands on U.S. support of Israel by portraying the Jewish State as "illegitimate" and acting like an "outlaw" in its relationship with the Palestinians, Jed Babbin, former undersecretary of defense to President George H.W. Bush, told Newsmax TV.

Last week, Secretary of State John Kerry warned Israel was jeopardizing the future of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He also defended the U.S. decision to allow the passage of a U.N. resolution last week demanding an end to Israeli settlements.

"Really what Kerry was saying is that Israel is an illegitimate state, it's an international outlaw, that it can either accept the terms that he dictates, or it can simply go on its own and try to be a dictatorship, which it clearly is not and is trying very hard not to be," Babbin said on Tuesday's "America Talks Live."

"You have to look at the other side here, Kerry never does. Kerry and [President Barack] Obama have always taken the Palestinian side, they have made no exception to that and, in this case, he's just scolding Israel.

"And his last show well maybe not his last shot, and Obama's not last shot at taking Israel to the U.N. and trying to tie Trump's hands before he even takes office."

Babbin — a senior fellow for the London Center of Policy Research and co-author with Herbert London of "The BDS War Against Israel" — said he is not sure how Trump will address the issue when he takes office Jan. 20.

"I don't know what's going to happen," Babbin said. "I do think that Mr. Trump can do things like defund the United Nations . . . roughly $8 billion a year.

"A part of that is on our so-called dues, which we pay 22 percent of the U.N.'s budget but much more of that is also spent on the U.N.'s activities, UNESCO, all the rest of those things. He can cut all of that off. More importantly, the U.N. is really a sideshow. It's always been."

Babbin told Malzberg that Trump could also invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to his inauguration speech, look him straight in the eye and say the U.N. resolution has "'no meaning, we will give them no force, in effect, and Israel is our friend.' That's one of the things he can do right away."

"Then he can also go on and do a lot of other things to really reduce the U.N.'s importance and to make sure that the Israelis know, and let the Israeli government know, we're not abandoning them. Obama has already," he said.
