Gary Bauer: Jeb Doesn't Fully Understand 'the Mood of the Nation'

By    |   Tuesday, 16 Feb 2016 05:03 PM

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is a "decent man" who still doesn't understand the dour mood of Americans who are sick of politics as usual in Washington, Gary Bauer, president of American Values, a leading conservative think-tank, told Newsmax TV.

"I'm still trying to get comfortable with what now passes as political discourse of the United States. Quite frankly, Jeb Bush is a great guy, a decent man, he was pro-life as a governor, I admire him," Bauer said Tuesday to J.D. Hayworth on "Newsmax Prime."

"But I don't believe even now that Gov. Bush fully understands the mood of the nation and how many Americans are almost in despair because of what they've seen happen over the last seven plus years.

"And not only watched it happen, but watched it happen with what they perceived to be very little opposition from Republican insiders in Washington."

That inaction by GOP lawmakers who promised voters they would get action is the reason Donald Trump has triumphed as the party's presidential front-runner, despite having no experience as a politician, according to Bauer, an undersecretary of education and chief domestic policy adviser in the Reagan administration.

"I think that's what's created Donald Trump and I think it's going to bedevil the party for a long time until they figure out that they need to step up their game and start talking a lot tougher about a lot of issues," Bauer said.

"More importantly, they need to zero in what's happened in Middle America to working class America. The trick here is how to stop Donald Trump, but in the process not lose his supporters in November because if the Republicans don't get him, they're not going to defeat Hillary Clinton or even Bernie Sanders."

Bush is currently struggling with low -polling in an effort to make a campaign comeback in South Carolina — which holds its presidential primary on Feb. 20. He's even brought his brother, former President George W. Bush, in to campaign for him in the Palmetto State.

The Virginia-based American Values describes itself as being "deeply committed to defending life, traditional marriage and equipping our children with the values necessary to stand against liberal education and cultural forces."
