Ex-NYPD Detective: FBI Chief's Racism Comments 'Really Strange'

Monday, 16 Feb 2015 05:48 PM

Retired New York City Detective Harry Houck said he was stunned by FBI Director James Comey’s recent speech about policing and racism, in which Comey said the nation was at a crossroads.

"I knew he was an Obama appointee, but I didn't expect this. This is really strange," Comey said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"I wonder how many police officers they surveyed to be able to come out with … a comment like that with a blank statement saying that officers look at blacks on one corner wearing the same clothes differently than they do on whites in one corner.

"Here's a man who has probably never spent a day in the streets in his life. He's an attorney, he's behind the desk and he does a great job prosecuting cases, I might add. But how he can make a statement like this is incredibly terrible to me."

In comments made last Thursday at Georgetown University, Comey said the nation is at a crossroads regarding race relations and law enforcement. He mentioned the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York, at the hands of white police officers.

He said cops who work in neighborhoods where most street crime is committed by young African American men may hold unconscious biases and be tempted to take what he called "lazy mental shortcuts" in dealing with suspicious situations.

But Houck, now president of Houck Consulting, said police must be able to profile suspects in order to do their jobs properly.

"People do have to be profiled. There's certain types of behavior and body language that you pick up on the street. This whole profiling thing, you know, do some police officers do it? Sure. I'm an idiot to sit here and tell you that some police officers don't do this," he said.

"But as far as all the police officers out there because they're white, that's totally insane. I'm tired of them referencing the [Eric] Garner and [Michael] Brown cases every time there's some kind of bad relations between white police officers and the community because these officers never did anything wrong.

"They were never indicted, they were never charged, they followed police procedure and to use these two cases as a catalyst for problems with police officers is totally insane.... We have laws that we've got to follow."
