Muslim Leader: Help Us Expose 'Moral Bankruptcy' of ISIS

By    |   Monday, 23 Feb 2015 10:02 PM

A Muslim leader who has called the Islamic State a "cult of death" told Newsmax TV on Monday that Muslims in America are actively promoting their religion as one of life — and are expelling would-be extremists in their midst from mosques and communities by reporting them to the authorities.

But word of that work isn't getting out, because the news media pays far more attention to alarming videos published by terror groups who claim to kill in the name of Islam, Salam Al-Marayati, president of the Los Angeles-based Muslim Public Affairs Council, told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner.

"Let's face it: Our message is boring," said Al-Marayati. "Being a moderate is not sensational and sexy. So when you've got ISIS creating Hollywood production-level videos out there that are barbaric — they're horrifying, they're terrifying — but they're done at that level, and we don't have the resources to counter that, that's what we're talking about."

Muslim leaders and communities need to work with government, law enforcement, and even Hollywood, he said, to offer a "message that is as — if not more — catchy and as newsworthy as what ISIS is doing."

"And that's the challenge," said Al-Marayati, calling it a task that even the U.S. government has struggled with.

"So maybe if we partner with each other, maybe we can come up with things that are more effective," he said. "But the idea is to get more Muslim community partners involved in this, and bring them on to the stage and get their voices amplified."

Groups including Al-Marayati's have posted videos of their own challenging the ISIS interpretation of Islam.

Al-Marayati said he's attended "hundreds" of conferences and sermons in which Muslim leaders have condemned extremist violence in the name of Islam and even issued fatwas against ISIS.

"It makes maybe the back of the newspaper," he said of those events.

Al-Marayati himself made waves at last week's White House-sponsored Summit on Countering Violent Extremism, telling a panel on Wednesday that "There is a cult of death that is being propagated by groups like al-Qaida and ISIL [the Islamic State or ISIS], and there are governments that have an ideology of compulsion.

"And we Muslims in Muslim communities now have the responsibility to set the record straight in that Islam is a theology of life," said Al-Marayati, CNS reports.

Al-Marayati told Berliner on Monday that Muslims here can join with non-Muslims "in a united front as Americans" against extremist groups such as ISIS, al-Qaida and Boko Haram and "expose their moral bankruptcy."

He said mosques and mainline Muslim communities are already engaged against the extremists in the contest of ideas, and that the lone-wolf terrorist phenomenon is partly a product of those efforts — with would-be jihadists identified, expelled and reported to law enforcement.

He called Muslims who are susceptible to ISIS appeals "losers" and "lost souls," but nevertheless a "reality" that must be addressed.
