Hillary Clinton's reference to half of Donald Trump's supporters as "deplorable" shows how disconnected the Washington elite is to the rest of America, veteran Republican consultant Mary Matalin told Newsmax TV.

"I will revert to my original thought on liberalism in general – and to a sad extent, some conservatives – the extent to which they are, the Beltway or the ruling class, detached from Americans," Matalin said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"The whole rise of the tea party and hence Donald Trump subsequent to it, was the perception, the right perception, the correct perception of the flyover country — that its rulers, the ruling class reject all of their values if you disagree.

"If you want secure borders, you're a xenophobe. If you believe in traditional marriage, you're a homophobe. I could go on and on. If you don't like Obamacare, you're a bigot. People just resent that. It all falls under the umbrella of political correctness and that's how Donald Trump launched in the first place."

Matalin, who served as an adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney and was presidential campaign manager for George H.W. Bush, said she is still not sure of what the Democratic presidential nominee stands for.

"Let's just say – it kind of pains me to even think about this – what if she were to be successful in her effort?" Matalin said. "What is her mandate? What is her mandate to govern?

"Even if she thinks [Trump’s supporters] are 30 or 40 percent deplorables, what, is she going to deport the deplorables? What is the mandate for this kind of view of the American people?"

Clinton's controversial quip came last Friday during a New York City fundraiser.

"You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorable," Clinton told supporters. "Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that.

"And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric. Now some of those folks — they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America."
