The founder and president for a leading tax reform group believes a piece of legislation that would abolish the IRS has some real promise.

Grover Norquist appeared on Newsmax TV's "The Hard Line" Thursday and told host Ed Berliner the Tax Code Termination Act already has 130 cosponsors in the House of Representatives.

"It's a real piece of legislation with a real chance of passing," Norquist said. "It has more than 130 co-sponsors in the House and what it says is three years from now, the IRS goes away.

"Now, are we going to go to no taxes? Unfortunately, probably not. But if you say in three years the tax code disappears, all 74,000 pages, it means you have to get to work now to get ready to pass either the fair tax, the retail sales tax, or a flat-rate income tax, or some reform.

"This is a real piece of legislation. The chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Rep. [Bob] Goodlatte, is leading this fight. This is very high-profile."

Norquist, the author of "End the IRS Before it Ends Us," told Berliner any of the tax plans put forth by the three Republicans in the race for president would be good for reforming the tax code. And he noted that the Democrats would raise taxes.

"Right now the two Democrats are talking about dramatic increases on everybody," he said, referring to Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. "All three of the [Republicans] running, [John] Kasich, [Ted] Cruz, and [Donald] Trump, have good tax reform plans that are significant tax reductions, not simply tax reform, but reform and reductions. All three have good plans."

Cruz has made the call to abolish the IRS and wants to replace the existing tax code with a simple flat tax.
