Grace-Marie Turner: Doctor Shortage Only Going to Get Worse

Tuesday, 30 Dec 2014 04:08 PM

America's supply of qualified medical doctors is dwindling — and it's only going to get worse, says Grace-Marie Turner, president of the Galen Institute.

"Even before Obamacare, we had a shortage of at least 40,000 physicians. Remember there's this huge baby boom generation aging into Medicare who are going to require more healthcare," Turner said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"And not only do we already have a doctor shortage, but at least half of physicians today are seriously considering leaving the practice of medicine early, doing something else, or retiring early.

"[That's] because of the incredible rules and regulations that are dictating how they practice medicine … Obamacare for many of them is just the last straw."

Turner — whose public policy research organization is devoted to advancing ideas and policies to create a "vibrant, patient-centered health sector" — says the shortage may be part of a big-business plot.

"In some ways you do wonder if it isn't part of an overall agenda that the fewer big practices, the fewer big hospital chains, the fewer big insurance companies that they have to work with, the easier it is to control them," Turner said.

"When you have all these independent doctor practices, all these independent hospitals, it's much harder to control them and so they seem to not mind that they drive them out of business.

"Why would you care if you're seeing a nurse practitioner instead of an actual physician? Well, I care, but the system doesn't care."

Turner points to Canada's troubled single-payer health program.

"In some provinces, hospitals closed down entirely in December … because they've run out of money," she said.

"Doctors have sold their practices to hospitals because they just can't deal with paperwork burden and the regulation. They're now employees of those hospitals."

She said Republicans do want to fight to overturn the Affordable Care Act in the coming year. "But they have to it strategically in a way that they can win. Shutting the government down doesn't help them win on Obamacare, but strategic strikes at the heart of this law absolutely can," Turner said.
