Ex-Va. AG Cuccinelli 'Skeptical' of GOP Working With Dems

Former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is skeptical of Republicans working with Democrats to come up with a healthcare plan to replace the Affordable Care Act and believes GOP lawmakers should be able to handle it themselves.

"Color me skeptical," Cuccinelli told host Steve Malzberg on Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live" on Thursday. "The Republicans need to come up with a plan. This is a lot less complicated than tax reform

"This debate has centered around insurance cost and financing healthcare, and there should be more than enough that Republicans can get together on, that obviously is going to critically involve repealing the key elements of Obamacare.

"Frankly, the federal government shouldn't be telling anybody what goes into an insurance package, nor should they be blocking insurance companies from selling their products across state lines."

His comments come a week after the House withdrew its American Health Care Act from a vote after it was determined it would not pass, because of objections from members of the House Freedom Caucus. After the vote debacle, Trump said he would be willing to work with Democrats on healthcare.

Cuccinelli, who is president of Senate Conservative Funds, also said he is in line with Trump's push for tax reform, although some of it will hinge on changes in healthcare.

"It's so much easier for no votes to build up than yes votes, [and it] is what makes tax reform so challenging . . . You still can run into principled objections like happened with the Freedom Caucus on healthcare, but the concept is one that just generically unites Republicans," he told Malzberg.

"Just because people are talking negatively at the outset doesn't mean there's any cause to throw in the towel. I mean, nothing worth doing is easy, so I appreciate the president's attitude of sort of, let's get started. We should get started.

"Because of some of the tax consequences of the Obamacare debacle, there is the opportunity to fix at least a few of those items under the umbrella of tax reform."
