The Story of Washington's River Crossing That Shaped America

By    |   Wednesday, 01 Jul 2015 12:40 PM

Everybody knows George Washington as the nation's first president — but often forgotten is his star-studded career in the military, during which he led the Continental Army across the Delaware River to attack the Hessians on Christmas Day — a strategy that helped lead to victory over the British.

That historical maneuver is now the subject of a riveting Newsmax TV documentary, "America's First D-Day: Washington's Crossing," which will be aired Friday at 10 p.m. ET, only on Newsmax TV, America's fastest growing cable network.

George Washington is often remembered as a humble, grey wigged, elder statesman who uttered the iconic line, "I cannot tell a lie."

But as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, Washington was known as a brilliant and shrewd plotter of military strategy — something desperately needed in 1776 as Army suffered loss after loss.

So on the freezing cold night of Dec. 25, Washington and his soldiers crossed the Delaware and launched a surprise attack on the Hessians, capturing nearly 1,000 of the enemy in Trenton, New Jersey.

That battle and another victory against the British in Princeton compelled the British to flee to New York City, a move that eventually led to a peace treaty in 1783.

The story of Washington's Delaware crossing is one of immense bravery and easily George Washington's finest hour.
