Sportswriter Vecsey: Painkillers Give Athletes 'False Courage'

By    |   Monday, 17 Nov 2014 06:55 PM

Countless professional athletes have been adversely affected by drug use, says veteran New York Times sports columnist George Vecsey, a day after federal agents conducted surprise drug searches of several NFL teams.

"One of the problems with painkillers, you sense something that's false courage," Vecsey, author of "Eight World Cups: My Journey through the Beauty and Dark Side of Soccer,"published by Times Books, said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"You've been around athletes. I've been around them all my life, to know that athletes are ruined in many ways by the time they get out of the sport."
