Gail Sheehy: Female Voters May See Trump as a 'Bully'

Hillary Clinton commands the support of a small army of Baby Boomer women while GOP contender Donald Trump is up against female voters who might perceive him as a "bully," bestselling author Gail Sheehy tells Newsmax TV.

In a frank analysis Thursday on "Newsmax Prime" with host J.D. Hayworth, Sheehy, whose newest book is "Daring: My Passages," says issues of trust and openness have "always been [Clinton's] Achilles heel."

"I was with her back in '91 when the Clintons were starting their campaign," she recalled, adding she spoke with Hillary Clinton after her 1992 joint "60 Minutes" interview with her husband, battling accusations of marital infidelity.

"I'm not sitting here some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette. I'm sitting here because I love him and I respect him," Hillary Clinton said then.

"I asked Hillary, how are you going to run against the criticism?" Sheehy recalls. "And she said, 'Bill doesn't understand how to fight back,' she said. 'I'm going to hammer the Republican attack machine and run against the press.'

"And I feel like she's been running against the press her whole life. This is not a healthy exercise and being more transparent, maybe admitting some mistakes from time to time, would stand her in much better stead."

Yet she's running with the solid support of an army of women voters between 50 and 70 years old, Sheehy notes.

"One out of five voters in 2016 will be Boomer women," Sheehy says. "An awful lot of them came of age at the same time as Hillary and have been waiting and waiting and waiting for even the Equal Rights Amendment, never mind a woman president.

"And she has that demographic really pretty well lined up. They want to see a woman president before they leave this earth. "

She appeared to have the support of younger women too, Sheehy notes, adding those women "perceive her as about 20 years younger than she is."

"Young donors haven't been showing up for Hillary, but initially they had a fairly positive view of her," she says.

Trump, however, could face a daunting problem with women voters, Sheehy contends.

"Women voters will really turn against him," she says. "He's a bully and any woman can recognize that 10 miles away. He likes to humiliate people and the only thing he likes better than that is getting attention, and this just seems like a big reality show …that he's doing."
