Fred Fleitz: Drone Strikes on Terrorists Hamper Intelligence

By    |   Friday, 08 May 2015 09:03 PM

The Obama administration's dependence on drone attacks to battle overseas terrorists is a strategy that's hurt America's "crucial counterterrorism intelligence," former CIA analyst Fred Fleitz says.

In a panel discussion moderated by "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth on Newsmax TV on Friday night, Fleitz decried an administration policy that would "rather kill than capture."

"We are very drone-dependent, and this administration has said they'd rather kill than capture with drones because they don't want to deal with [the military detention center at] Guantanamo, they don't want to deal with the problem of incarcerating and trying these terrorists," he said.

"When we do this ... we lose a great deal of very crucial counterterrorism intelligence. It's a policy that has hurt us."

Former Illinois GOP Rep. Michael Patrick Flanagan, who now has his own consulting firm, agreed, insisting, "The point is, we don't fight a fight anymore. We don't have an enemy in the field."

"Any price to keep us from having to put boots on the ground to interact with ISIS," Flanagan said, slamming President Barack Obama.

"He'll give the Iranians the bomb, he'll give the Kurds any kind of land or oil deals that they want, they'll give them a separate country if they ask for it ... he's in there for another 19 months, and he knows the next administration's going to have to deal with the larger portion of those promises."

Flanagan largely dismisses reports of a drone strike killing the al-Qaida commander behind the Charlie Hebdo massacre in France earlier this year.

"If we killed this guy — and I hope we did and I hope he's dead and I hope him and all his friends are dead — how many people around him did we kill with that drone?" Flanagan asked. "How many drones do we send before the one that got him? We don't know any of that, and we will never know any of that."

"We make more enemies outside of this country by willy-nilly throwing these drones in," he added.

Fleitz also said it should come as no surprise that Iranian Brig. Gen. Hossein Salami declares Iran ready to go to war with the United States with or without a nuclear deal.

"What's the surprise here?" Fleitz asks. "We've been fooling ourselves to think that Iran has changed its policies, still does not want to push radical Islam on the world, is still at war with the United States, with Western civilization, with Israel. This is just confirming something which we frankly should have realized was still going on."
