Frank Gaffney: America At War With 'Islamic Supremacism'

By    |   Friday, 17 Jul 2015 06:32 PM

A former deputy assistant secretary of defense tells Newsmax TV that America is at war with "Islamic supremacism" and its soldiers are not lone wolves, but instead are radicalized individuals.

Frank Gaffney, who served under President Ronald Reagan, spoke about Thursday's attacks in Chattanooga, Tenn. as they relate to the larger picture during an appearance on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Prime."

"What we're seeing is jihad. It is a global movement," Gaffney told host Ric Blackwell.

"The trouble is that these aren't lone wolves. They're not people who have been radicalized to some sort of lunatic fringe. These are individual jihadists acting in furtherance of a shared agenda, namely Islamic supremacism, and they're doing it in a manner that is consistent with the teachings of authoritative Islam as codified in the doctrine they call Sharia. And unless and until we get our heads around those realities, I'm afraid we're going to see a lot more of this not only elsewhere around the world but here as well."

The suspect in Thursday's attack, which left four Marines dead and three other people wounded, died in a shootout with police. FBI investigators are now looking into the background of 24-year-old Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, who was identified as the shooter, and what could have driven him to shoot up two military facilities.

Authorities believe he traveled to Jordan last year and possibly Yemen as well.

Gaffney and a "Newsmax Prime" panel member, former INS officer Michael Cutler, discussed what could be terrorists' new tactic of using naturalized U.S. citizens to conduct attacks on U.S. soil.

"If you look at the 9/11 Commission Report, and you know I provided testimony to the 9/11 Commission, we've seen failure after failure," Cutler says.

"Just this past February, Liban Haji Mohamed, a Somalian, was put on the FBI's most wanted list of terrorists. This guy was a naturalized citizen. The concern: he was driving a cab all over Washington D.C. for years and intended familiarity with it. We just had another terrorist in Ohio arrested, acquired U.S. citizenship and specifically spoke to his brother by electronic means talking about how he was getting citizenship so he could get a U.S. passport to facilitate his travel to Syria."

Cutler provides other examples, including the man who intended to detonate a bomb in Times Square in 2010 and the Boston Marathon bombers, one of whom was a naturalized citizen.

"There's no scrutiny to the process," Cutler adds. "There's no integrity to the process where we're giving these folks the keys to America's front door and that's a big problem."

Gaffney points out that a U.S. program that helps resettle refugees in America is another weak point that can be exploited by people with bad intentions. He also names America's border as another place where terrorists can slip through.

"We have got to recognize we are at war and the war is now very much here on the home front," Gaffney says. "They are targeting our military personnel and their families. They're targeting our law enforcement personnel and their families, and they are of course targeting the general population as well."

Part of the problem, Cutler argues, are the immigration and visa laws in the country. He called the Obama administration "totally out of control."
