Author: Fame Made $100M Fortune for Once-'Worse-Than-Broke' Clintons

Hillary and Bill Clinton are worth about $100 million — but the Democratic presidential candidate and the former two-term president were once paupers who worked hard to reverse their fortunes, political commentator and best-selling author Joe Consason told Newsmax TV.

"They were worse than broke," Conason, author of "Man of the World: The Further Endeavors of Bill Clinton," told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Wednesday. "They were deeply in debt, $12 million in debt, but if you're giving speeches at $250k a pop, you eventually will get out of debt and become rich.

"If you sell a book for the highest advance in publishing history, as he did with his memoirs, and then publish a couple of other ones and you get other big advances, all of that you eventually accumulate some wealth.

"They are worth now, I think, $100 million or so, but it's taken many, many speeches over 15 years to accumulate that amount of money."

Conason's book, published by Simon & Schuster, chronicles the 42nd president's post-White House career warts and all — from personally earning tens of millions of dollars to raising billions for philanthropy.

He also praised the Clintons as "advocates of racial justice in this country for a long time."

"When Bill Clinton was a young man, he was one of the more outspoken opponents of the Ku Klux Klan, which was still very active in Arkansas in those days – I think they have a feeling about that," Conason said.

He dismissed criticism Clintons are racist following Bill Clinton's forgiving the late Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia for once being a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

"I think the notion that somehow the Clintons are racist is one that people in the African-American community would find absurd and ridiculous, and the idea that Republicans are going to try to make that case 'well they were advocates of the KKK' is nonsense," Conason said.

"They fought them all their lives, and African-American people know that, and that is why they voted for her and for him in record numbers every time they've run for office."
