Fla. Gay Wed Foe: Society Can't Survive Without Natural Marriage

An opponent of same-sex marriage who this week saw his state, Florida, join the list of those legalizing gay unions told Newsmax TV on Friday that his opposition is not bigotry but a defense of children.

"We simply can't do civilization without this institution called natural marriage," John Stemberger, president and general counsel of the Florida Family Policy Council, told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner, calling legal same-sex marriage in 36 states "a vast, untested social experiment upon children."

While heterosexual marriage admittedly has its own problems such as divorce and infidelity, "gay marriage does nothing but dilute and further confuse what this institution is — the essence of which is the union of a man and a woman for procreation, for socializing children," said Stemberger.

"All the social science studies show that kids always perform better when they have both a mother and a father," he said. "And part of the problem with same-sex marriage is it becomes the end of gender in society, the end of the importance of gender, the beauty and the strength that a man and a woman bring, the differences between the two."

Saying so does not make him a bigot, said Stemberger.

"I mean this is political demagoguery," he said of the bigotry charge. "This is inappropriate. This is not what we do in a democracy. We discuss and exchange ideas and the ideas that hopefully are truer hopefully come to the top."

He said that defenders of male-female matrimony are "not given the ability to do that."

Advocates like himself will keep pressing their case even as states and courts increasingly take the other side because heterosexual marriage is backed by decades of research into the well-being of children, said Stemberger.

"We're talking about thousands of peer-reviewed studies that appear in refereed journals," he said, all showing that "when a man and a woman together have a child … and they stay with that child, that child performs better in every indicator of human flourishing."
