Ex-Israel Mayor: US Sanctions on Israel Would Backfire on Dems

By    |   Tuesday, 09 Dec 2014 04:33 PM

President Barack Obama would only harm his fellow Democrats by imposing sanctions on Israel as punishment for new housing construction in Jerusalem, a former mayor of the Shiloh settlement in Israel's West Bank told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"Obama would be hurting Hillary Clinton more than anyone else by declaring sanctions against Israel," David Rubin, founder of Shiloh Israel Children's Fund, told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner, responding to a report that the president is eyeing sanctions to discourage a new Israeli housing project in disputed territory.

Rubin suggested that sanctions now would have consequences later for Obama's former secretary of state, Clinton, if she runs to succeed him as president.

"People would understand that this is the president of the Democratic Party, and if he is declaring sanctions against America's only real ally in the Middle East, then he's going to be hurting his party," said Rubin, author of "The Islamic Tsunami: Israel and America in the Age of Obama."

"Of course, it would be blatantly clear that the Republicans are the party that stands with Israel," he added.

Sanctions talk reportedly started after Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met at the White House in October and clashed over new home construction in a part of Jerusalem where critics claim Israel's goal is to effectively remove any Palestinian land claims.

Rubin said that condemnations of the housing project, and of new Israeli airstrikes inside of Syria, are further proof of a "double standard" in which both the United Nations and now the Obama administration criticize Israel for "defending itself."

"It's very unfair, and we have to act in our own interests," said Rubin. "There's a limit to how much we can play this game of get bashed over the head and then try to explain yourself."

Asked what happens after that limit is reached, Rubin said that Israel might simply have to go its own way and fight its enemies as it sees fit.

"When you fight a war, you need to fight the war to win," he said, "and, unfortunately, you can't win a war with one hand tied behind your back."
