Neil Sroka: Polls Show Elizabeth Warren Would Have 'A Shot'

By    |   Thursday, 12 Feb 2015 12:18 PM

A poll organized by Democracy for America to determine whether progressive Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has a legitimate shot at the Democrat presidential nomination showed she's a contender, according to Neil Sroka, communications director for the organization.

During an appearance Thursday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum," Sroka said the poll was designed to figure out where Warren would stand in the race once people understood "who and where she is."

"When voters are exposed to Warren's message and background, she goes into contention in these key primary caucus states," Sroka said. "What we showed was not where the race is right now or what would happen tomorrow if the election were to take place, but rather are voters in New Hampshire or Iowa movable towards Warren?

"Yes, when they're exposed to Warren's message and biography, progressives and Democrats in Iowa and New Hampshire can and do move to her column."

Warren has repeatedly said she has no plans to run, but Sroka said there are 300,000 people across the country who want her to get in.

Polls out of Iowa and New Hampshire showing Hillary Clinton leading the pack of potential Democrat candidates in the 2016 race are at this point nothing more than a test of name recognition, according to Sroka.

Once people are educated about Warren's ideas, it's a game-changer, he said.

"She's got a shot because when you look at issue after issue, when you talk about expanding Social Security benefits, student loan crisis that's devolved in this country, and making sure that the wealthiest pay their fair share and big corporations don't get away with paying nothing, the vast majority of Americans, right, left and center, are supportive of Warren," Sroka said.

"We've done polling in Kentucky, Texas and a number of different red states showing that these issues are incredibly popular with wide swaths of voters."
