Dick Morris: Obamacare Sinking Education Funding

By    |   Monday, 09 Feb 2015 12:00 PM

President Barack Obama’s proposal for free community college is a joke considering funding for higher education is in the tank as a result of the skyrocketing costs of healthcare, namely Obamacare, political strategist Dick Morris said Monday on "America’s Forum" on Newsmax TV.

"State legislatures throughout the country have cut way back on their funding of community colleges, and while the overall cost of community colleges has not increased and state universities haven't increased much either, the share that's paid by tuition has risen because state legislatures are not funding it. And therefore, we need a new plan for free community colleges with a higher tax credit," Morris said.

"What is driving that? Medicaid, because the more of a state budget has to go for healthcare, the less there is for education. What is cresting that? Obamacare. That expands the Medicaid threshold up to a third above poverty."

"The Medicaid portion of Obamacare has doomed free community college because it's forcing the legislature to allocate money from schools to healthcare," Morris said. "And the less for schools, the higher the tuition has to go, and you're in a race now where the federal government is trying to subsidize its way out of a problem it is causing."

Obama has made a "massive public decision to fund healthcare, not schools," he said.

He also weighed in on Obama’s message on the Grammys Sunday night, during which he implored that violence against women stop.

Morris called Obama’s words "very smart but totally hypocritical," noting that Obama refuses to place violent terror organization Boko Haram, "the poster group for violence against girls and women," on the list of terror organizations, and refuses to condemn Islamic terrorism for its "systematic targeting of women and girls."

"He says this is domestic violence," Morris said. "His refusal to name things by their proper name and identify their causality makes those remarks totally facile and hypocritical."

On the scandal with NBC News anchor Brian Williams and his repeated false claim that he was on board a helicopter that was shot down in Iraq, Morris suggested "resignation, personal renewal, then rehabilitation, because fundamentally this is a character flaw."

There are "many, many instances, it appears, of Brian Williams fudging stuff that happened," Morris said.

He compared Williams’ claims to some made by Hillary Clinton, who came under scrutiny after saying she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary and that she was under fire in Bosnia.

"When you get someone who's prone to that kind of embellishment, which is really a way of feeling kind of inadequate and feeling like I need to come onto the audience by creating a shared identity, once that happens, it's throughout his life," Morris said.

"And Williams, if he tries a straight defense, one after another after another these bricks are going to fall until one knocks them out."

Williams, he said, needs to come clean with viewers if wants any shot at a second chance.

"If he admits the problem, if he himself brings out other examples and if he says, 'I'm going to go therapy, I'm going to work on this problem, I'm going to work on this issue,' and then after two or three years of genuinely working on it, he genuinely changes on the inside, people will believe he's changed on the outside."
