GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump is the party's polling leader in a crowded primary field, but that doesn't necessarily give him leverage against the party, political analyst Dick Morris says.

In an interview with "Newsmax Now" hosts John Bachman and Miranda Khan on Newsmax TV Friday, the author of "Power Grab" says Trump had a strong performance in the first Republican presidential debate Thursday night, though "there's a big 'but' in that … his decision [to] announce the idea of a third-party bid."

Morris disagrees with Trump's post-debate assertion he's got "leverage" with Republicans because of his standing.

At the debate, when Fox News moderator Bret Baier asked the candidates to raise their hands if they would not pledge to avoid a third-party run, only Trump raised his hand.

In a post-debate interview, he added: "Why should I give up that leverage?"

"Trump is in the lead but I don't think he has leverage in that sense," Morris tells "Newsmax Now."

"The Republicans are very worried about the idea of a third candidate and they may be reluctant to support Trump if they feel that he's going to use that momentum and carry it over into a third party bid."

"Republicans feel that Ross Perot's third party bid was the reason [Bill] Clinton beat [George H.W.] Bush in '92 and they don't want this to elect another Clinton this time," he added.
