The Defense Department won't have any problems imposing a mandatory quarantine on soldiers because they "have to follow orders," unlike healthcare volunteers, says biosafety expert Debra Sharpe.

"It's probably a better-safe-than-sorry approach," Sharpe, president of Sharpe Solutions International, told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"The military can easily do this because these are soldiers who really have to follow orders and direct command structures," she explained. "It's probably easier to do that with them, certainly, than the healthcare workers that are coming back from west Africa."

Sharpe said it's harder with healthcare volunteers treating Ebola patients in west Africa because "when a lot of these individuals said they would go, they didn't expect to be quarantined upon their return."

She said the main problem is that there is a "shifting landscape" in the United States compared to when they left.

"People didn't know really what they were signing up for when they said they would go," Sharpe explained.

However, she said, "some states are offering to pay for them to stay in quarantine, so that may make it more palatable for a lot of folks."
