Mideast Expert Daniel Pipes on Iran Deal: 'Bizarre' and 'Wretched'

By    |   Tuesday, 14 Jul 2015 06:45 PM

The Iran nuclear arms deal will go down as the worst deal in American history — and maybe in the history of the world, Daniel Pipes, president of the Middle East Forum, tells Newsmax TV.

"As a historian, I would suggest that this is the worst deal, worst treaty, agreement, accord, in American history, in modern history, and perhaps all of history. It's an astonishment, it's a bafflement, it's bizarre, it's wretched," Pipes said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"The U.S. government became the lawyer for the Iranian government. When journalists and other critics would say, what about this? What about that? The U.S. government would say, well never mind, you know you don't have to understand … it's not very important, it's all really the same.

"Presumably the U.S. government, the Obama administration will continue in that role for at least the next year and a half."

Under the deal, announced by President Barack Obama, some economic sanctions would gradually be lifted in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear arsenal. The negotiations were led by the United States and involved six world powers.

Pipes believes the deal further destabilizes the Middle East.

Those are the two main ways. First is easing and legitimation of the Iranian nuclear program, and secondly is a greater sum of money going to the Iranians," he said, referring to the lifting of sanctions.

"So all the deprivations they've had in recent years, financially, economically, militarily are going to be fixed in one fell swoop."

He also said Israel, which has condemned the deal, will be ready to take action against Iran if necessary.

"They have signaled this over and over again. [Benjamin] Netanyahu is now in his third term as prime minister and he has found his role and that is to protect Israel from Iran," Pipes said.

"My expectation is it will not be planes over Jordan or Syria or Saudi Arabia, but it will be some kind of disruption within [the] Iranian nuclear program because we've already seen a lot of this. We've seen computer viruses …"

Pipes' group, a Philadelphia-based, non-profit, "promotes American interests in the Middle East and protects Western values from Middle Eastern threats."
