WSJ's Henninger: Radical Islam Must Mainstream as Christianity Did

By    |   Thursday, 15 Jan 2015 04:25 PM

Radical fundamentalist Islam must undergo the kind of sweeping changes Christianity went through in order to thrive in the modern world, says Daniel Henninger, deputy editorial page director of The Wall Street Journal.

"Radical fundamentalist Islam is the only organized religion in the world that when it is upset at what people are saying about it goes out and kills them, right? Nobody else does that," Henninger said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"The great majority of Muslims do not condone this sort of thing, but the religion itself needs to undertake the sort of reformation that Christianity went through several centuries ago, which is to say, find a way to accommodate itself to the modern world."

Early versions of Christianity were also intolerant and included the persecution of such groups as pagans, and the approval of slavery.

Henninger believes that if radical Muslims do not reform, "the modern world ultimately is going to have to crack back.

"The French, the British, certainly [British Prime Minister] David Cameron and [German Chancellor] Angela Merkel, at this point, are willing to take action," he said.

Henninger's comments come about a week after the terrorist attack at the Paris satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, in which masked gunmen executed 12 people to avenge the publishing of satirical cartoons making fun of the Prophet Muhammed.

Henninger also noted that last week, the leader of Boko Haram, in announcing that he was about to invade Cameroon, said, "Democracy is blasphemy."

"Think about that. Democracy is blasphemy. That is what these fundamentalists believe, whether it is them or [Islamic State] ISIS in Iraq and Syria or those who are now operating throughout Europe and I have no doubt eventually in the United States," Henninger said.

"It's not just merely that they think individuals are infidels, they think the entire system is illegitimate. So this is a force that is not going to stop."
