Daniel Hannan: US, Allies Must Gain Self-Confidence to Fight Terror

By    |   Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 02:18 PM

Terrorists and paramilitaries around the world feel empowered because the U.S. and its NATO allies lack the self-confidence to wage an all-out war with them, Daniel Hannan, a conservative party member of European Parliament.

"Militarily, the US and the NATO allies are pretty much unchallenged in terms of our satellite systems, our missile defense systems, and so on," Hannan said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"We could take on pretty much the rest of the planet and yet these groups of ragtag paramilitaries in the grim industrial towns of eastern Ukraine, in parts of Syria and Iraq, are able to flick two fingers at us.

"They're able to get away with it. And why is that? Because they sense that our self-confidence is missing — and that's the thing we really do need to change."

Hannan, a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party, blames the Obama administration in part.

"Under this administration, the worst thing you could do is to be too arrogant, the highest virtue is not courage or patriotism, [it's] not offending minorities," he said.

"That naturally communicates itself to people in pretty unpleasant places as a lack of certainty, a lack of confidence, and they draw their own conclusion."

Hannan called for "a more assertive policy" from the U.S. and other world leaders.

"It's about being prepared to say that our way of life is better than other people's," he said.

"[If] you start going around the world telling everyone America's been too arrogant and too ready to resort to force and too imperialistic and blah, blah, blah, sure, you get applauded by … panty-waists in Europe.

"They love that because that's what they want to hear. But they're not the only people listening to the speech. Other people draw their own conclusions."
