Historian Craig Shirley: Clinton Attacks Won't Hurt Trump

Attacks on Republican Donald Trump by Democrat Hillary Clinton are unlikely to have an effect because Trump already has defined himself to the American people, presidential historian Craig Shirley tells Newsmax TV.

"I'm not sure these attacks are going to work," Shirley said Wednesday on "The Hard Line." "In fact, I just saw a poll in which Hillary Clinton's unfavorables are actually higher than Donald Trump's and he actually has a net favorable now."

Trump has smartly defined himself to the American people before he can be defined by any of his opponents, much as Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan did, Shirley told host Ed Berliner.

"The attack from Richard Nixon: Would you buy a used car from this man, Tricky Dick?" bounced off, Shirley said, because he defined himself as being tough on communism.

Attacks by Hillary Clinton on Trump "may be funny to the political classes, but with the American people it's not important," he said.

Trump has gone after Clinton's husband, former President Bill Clinton, and while attacks on spouses is nothing new, Shirley said, they seem to have achieved a new level this cycle.

One the other hand, Betty Ford was a big issue in the 1976 campaign especially when she said in a "60 Minutes" interview that she supported abortion rights, he noted.

"Mary Todd Lincoln wasn't in the newspapers, but it was a whispering campaign about her in 1860 and 1864," Shirley added. "I don't know if it's a brave new world, but it's certainly a new world in which we're talking about things that we didn't talk about before. Yet, we did talk about them, just in different tones."
