Col. Patrick Murray: We're Nowhere Close to Containing ISIS

By    |   Thursday, 02 Jul 2015 07:02 PM

America is nowhere close to containing the threat of Islamic State (ISIS) jihadists in our homeland, even as concerns rise over lone wolf attacks during the Independence Day weekend, retired Army Col. Patrick Murray told Newsmax TV Thursday.

In a candid interview with "The Hard Line" host Ed Berliner, the author of "Government Is the Problem" said concerns of a heightened risk of attacks is understandable since "these guys are magicians with social networking.

"They're sending out 100,000 tweets per day," he noted. "I mean they could take over Twitter or Facebook and run it just fine and they're recruiting fighters and they're also recruiting and motivating the so-called lone wolf attacks and that's the biggest concern that we have over our Independence Day weekend coming up."

Yet America still hasn't "gotten our arms around it yet."

"The threat has morphed," he said. "When you think back to Mohammed Atta on 9/11/2001 and the troglodytes that came with him, it's totally different now. Now we're talking about American citizens — disaffected young men and some young women right here in the United States … they're much harder to track and they're much harder to deal with."

Murray noted that, according to FBI Director James Comey, there's active ISIS investigations in all 50 states, and that "thousands of Americans are following ISIS on the Internet, so it is a challenge for our police forces and our intelligence community to keep up with this."

Murray also decried the lack of leadership that's led to a precipitous drop in optimism among military personnel.

"In 2009, at the end of the Bush administration, a Military Times survey showed that over 90 percent, 91 percent of our Armed Forces had high morale," he recounted. "They had good to excellent quality of life. Right now it's plummeted to 56 percent during the Obama era and it's going to get worse before it gets better. It's all about leadership."

"If you think about serving in the military, it's not just a job," he added. "Soldiers, men and women serving in the military, they want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. … We've had substantial budget cuts under the Obama administration, substantial troop cuts under the Obama administration, and that hurts our morale with our soldiers both professionally and personally."
