Matt Kibbe: GOP Must Be Willing to Use Power of the Purse

By    |   Wednesday, 31 Dec 2014 01:45 PM

As Republicans get ready to take the majority in both the House and Senate, Matt Kibbe of FreedomWorks says that they must be ready to fight the Democrats and President Barack Obama by using the power of the purse.

"Republicans now have control of the Senate . . . but ultimately they're going to have to be willing to fight budget fights, defund the things that they're opposed to, trim spending," Kibbe, president of the tea party group, told J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Wednesday.

And they're going to have to do these things "understanding that the president will veto that, and they have to stand up to that," he explained.

"Nothing's really changed from last year to this year in that sense, and if their only policy position is . . . 'we will not shut down the government,' it's difficult to see how they do fight the president," he contends.

"They missed a big opportunity to use the power of the purse" earlier in December, when Congress voted to fund the government for another three months, he added.

"There's all sorts of opportunities," the FreedomWorks president said.

"'We're going to have a fight on immigration in February," Kibbe explained. "We're likely to have a serious fight on Obamacare, should the Supreme Court decision on King v. Burwell defund the subsidies for  . . . the federal exchanges."

But to take on these issues, Republicans are "going to have to use the power of the purse, and they've been unwilling to do it so far," he added.

According to Kibbe, one area where Republicans and Democrats may come together in the new Congress is reforming the criminal justice system, specifically "changing the sentencing laws so that we stop putting so many nonviolent offenders in jail, crowding out the real function of jails."

In fact, the head of the tea party group said that he is currently working with the progressive group MoveOn.org on some of these issues, and "Charles Koch and George Soros have expressed interest in these types of issues," as well.
