Carson: I Wouldn't Have Paid Puncher's Legal Fees

Dr. Ben Carson, who has endorsed Donald Trump for president, says he does not agree with the Republican presidential front-runner's revelation that he's considering paying the legal fees of a 78-year-old man who "sucker-punched" a protester at one of his rallies last week.

"That certainly is not what I would've done," Carson said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Even if I was … I wouldn't have announced it publicly because that does provide for the progressives a gift that you don't need to give them."

John McGraw allegedly blindsided protester Rakeem Jones with a punch while leaving the stands of Trump's rally last Wednesday in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was arrested and charged with assault, battery and disorderly conduct.

"I'm going to look at it. I'm going to see, you know, what was behind this, because it was a strange event," Trump said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"But from what I heard, there was a lot of taunting and a certain finger was placed in the air. Not nice …"I've actually instructed my people to look into it, yes."

The punching incident, caught on video, has become a flashpoint in accusations being made by Trump's opponents about violence at the candidate's rallies, which has also seen an increase in protests over the past month.

Asked by Malzberg why he believes Trump in considering the gesture, Carson said: "Recognize that you're dealing with somebody who has become world famous with showmanship. There's no reason to expect that's going to stop now."
