Rep. Farenthold: Hillary Email Furor Fuels Benghazi Suspicions

By    |   Wednesday, 04 Mar 2015 06:24 PM

Hillary Clinton using personal email exclusively as secretary of state fuels suspicions that she is hiding knowledge about the deadly 2012 embassy compound attack in Benghazi, Libya, that happened on her watch, Rep. Blake Farenthold told Newsmax TV  on Wednesday.

"There is definitely smoke in Benghazi. There are dead men in Benghazi, and you just can't ignore that. This email just adds fuel to the fire, if you will, that Hillary has something to hide," the Texas Republican and House Oversight and Government Reform committee member told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner.

The Sept. 11, 2012 attack, in which dozens of militants strafed the embassy annex with gunfire and grenades, led to the deaths of of four Americans including Ambassador Chris Stevens, who had previously pleaded with State Department superiors for more security.

The attack prompted firings of some lower-level State Department officials, and spawned multiple probes into reported security lapses before and during the siege, and inquiries into questionable statements about the cause of the attack, which occurred just weeks before the 2012 election.

Members of a House select committee investigating Benghazi announced on Wednesday that they will subpoena emails Clinton wrote relating to the matter.

Farenthold said the Benghazi panel chaired by Rep. Trey Gowdy actually "had the information on these emails before it broke in The New York Times, and they were continuing to investigate it."

Farenthold guessed that the panel would have gone public earlier with news of Clinton's private email workaround, but probably decided there were "further leads" that needed exploring first.

As for Clinton, "Oh, she's got to know better," said Farenthold. "The White House protocols on email have to be something that she was familiar with from back when [husband] Bill [Clinton] was president. There's no way she didn't know about the requirement that this email be archived.

"Heck, it's just been in the news recently with the Lois Lerner situation," he said, referring to missing emails in a congressional probe of the IRS, which is accused of targeting politically conservative nonprofits when Lerner oversaw tax-exempt organizations.

Asked whether Clinton should disqualify herself from seeking the presidency in 2016, based on the email revelations, Farenthold said, "As a Republican I would love to see her run for president. She's got so much baggage right now that she'd be easier to beat.

"She's got Benghazi. She's got this. She's got the false storyof getting shot at as she was getting out of an airplane," he said. "She and her husband don't play well with the truth, it looks like."
