Bill Kristol: Cruz Stretches Credibility Tying Trump NATO Stance to Brussels Bloodbath

Sen. Ted Cruz is mixing apples and oranges when he lashes out at Donald Trump’s call for a reduced U.S. role in the NATO alliance just 24 hours after the deadly Islamic terrorist attacks in Brussels, Bill Kristol, founder and editor of The Weekly Standard, tells Newsmax TV.

"I'm pro NATO. It's got its problems, but it's better than nothing, so I agree with Cruz's criticism of Trump in that respect…. I think it's worth it if the general guarantor is reasonable peace in Europe. I wish NATO were stronger, not weaker," Kristol said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"But I do think Cruz, as often is the case with Cruz, whom I like and who I certainly would support strongly over Trump — he often reaches for that extra mile [to make] a political point.

"You can just condemn the terror and condemn radical Islam and condemn Obama for not having the right policies on it."

CNN reports that Cruz, reacting to the Brussels horror, said during a news conference on Tuesday:

"It is striking that the day after Donald Trump called for weakening NATO, withdrawing from NATO, we see Brussels, where NATO is headquartered, the subject of a radical Islamic terror attack.

"Donald Trump is wrong that America should withdraw from the world and abandon our allies. Donald Trump is wrong that American should retreat from Europe, retreat from NATO, hand Putin a major victory and while he's at it hand ISIS a major victory."

But Kristol told Malzberg that Brussels, "doesn't really have much connection, I think, with NATO. I think we'd be equally appalled by the terrorist attack if it occurred in the capital of some country that wasn't in NATO."

NATO — the North Atlantic Treaty Organization — is an alliance of countries from North America and Europe committed to fulfilling the goals of the North Atlantic Treaty, which was signed in April 1949.

Trump continues to be the top presidential candidate among Republican voters, according to a new CNN/ORC poll:

According to the poll:
  • 47 percent of Republican want to see Trump win;
  • 31 percent of Republicans want to see Texas Sen. Ted Cruz win;
  • 12 percent of Republicans want to see Ohio Gov. John Kasich win;
