Kristol: 'Mysterious' Nunes Needs to Say Who Cleared Him Into WH

(Newmax TV)

Who exactly arranged for Devin Nunes' cloak-and-dagger meeting on White House grounds during which the House Intelligence chair reviewed documents from a "source" pertaining to the federal probe of Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election?

Bill Kristol, editor-at-large of The Weekly Standard, says it's imperative that the identity of that person be revealed and criticized Nunes for potentially jeopardizing the investigation with his moonlight rendezvous.

"Let's just find out what staffer cleared him in ... You cannot have White House staffers freelancing, not telling their bosses that they're giving stuff to a congressman," Kristol said Wednesday on Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"I just think it's a bad way to run a White House. If I were [White House Chief of Staff] Reince Priebus, I'd be having a heart attack about this."

Nunes has been under pressure by Democrats to recuse himself from the committee's probe following the stealth-like White House rendezvous.

On Monday, the California Republican confirmed he had quietly met with a source on the grounds of the White House complex last week to review the classified data, but denied he had coordinated anything with Trump's aides. He also did not identify the person he met with.

After looking at the information, Nunes said at a news conference that U.S. spy agencies might have captured the communications of Trump and his associates through incidental collection.

Trump trumpeted Nunes' disclosure as helpful to his widely-disputed claim that former President Barack Obama had "wire tapped" his phones at Trump Tower in New York City.

"I think the way in which Nunes has done this has been terrible … The way Nunes has handled it is just mysterious," said Kristol said. "I just think he's really damaged the prospects of really finding out what really happened under President Obama."

Kristol added that if there is "nothing nefarious" about Nunes' White House visit, "then someone should just say 'I signed him in."'
