Original Newsmax Documentary Asks: 'Can the Bible Save Hollywood?'

Tuesday, 31 Mar 2015 08:38 PM

Hollywood desperately needs a shot of that old time religion — and acclaimed producer Mark Burnett and his actress wife Roma Downey are ready to deliver.

In Newsmax TV's absorbing new documentary, "Can the Bible Save Hollywood?" the dynamic power couple discuss the creation of their brand-new miniseries "A.D. The Bible Continues."

And they reveal how more such faith-based productions can give Hollywood's sagging box office returns a big shot in the arm.

The documentary airs Thursday, April 2nd, at 8 p.m., Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific, and Friday, April 3rd, at 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacific, on Newsmax TV.

For Burnett — the Emmy Award-winning producer of such smash TV shows as "Survivor," "The Apprentice," "The Voice" and "Shark Tank" — Hollywood is woefully lacking in producing inspiring, family-friendly fare.

But while the glitzy Los Angeles filmmaking community has been accused of being hostile toward Christianity, Burnett says there are a number of Christians in entertainment.

He says that even people who don't actively practice a religion see the Bible as an important book worthy of examination.

“Six billion Bibles have been purchased worldwide. It is a story that permeates the world and needs to be told over and over, and we’ve done it in an epic way,” Burnett told Newsmax TV.

He and Downey helped remedy that in 2013 with "The Bible," which attracted 100 million viewers to become the most-watched cable miniseries of the year.

"A.D. The Bible Continues" — the eagerly anticipated follow-up based on the life and times of Jesus, his apostles, and the rise of the church — will debut on Easter Sunday, April 5, on NBC. It will air on the following 11 Sundays in prime time.

"Can the Bible Save Hollywood?" will give viewers an exciting sneak peek at the upcoming show and reveal how more faith-based productions, including Burnett's "Ben Hur," are on the way.
