Bill Donohue: Bibi Was 'Brilliant'; No One but US Will Stop Iran

By    |   Tuesday, 03 Mar 2015 05:12 PM

Bill Donohue, president of The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, says Benjamin Netanyahu's "brilliant" speech to Congress makes him wish President Barack Obama was "as tough and clear in his vision" as the Israeli prime minister.

"He was brilliant. As a matter of fact, he speaks for me," Donohue said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"He says, look, stop the threats to Israel, stop supporting terrorism, stop promoting violence around the world. And he's not afraid to use the dreaded words, 'militant Islam.'"

During his 39-minute speech, Netanyahu cautioned Obama against inking a nuclear deal with Iran, warning it would be a "countdown to a potential nuclear nightmare" by a country that "will always be an enemy of America."

Donohue said he is convinced, as is Netanyahu, that a U.S. proposal for a 10-year-limitation on a nuclear production with Iran is worthless.

"You've got four nations which are at least partially occupied by Iran and we're going to sit down and negotiate with them with restrictions which expire in 10 years?" Donohue asked.

"This reminds me of the kind of stuff a professor works out on the blackboard … It's that whole State Department mentality. You can create peace on the blackboard and the like.

"You're dealing with the greatest threat, as he said, and he should know, he's Jewish. Since the Nazis, this is what we're faced with. They're not going to stop unless we stop them."

Donohue noted that Iran is an authoritarian regime in which its dictator is solely concerned about political power.

"This is totalitarian. This is … why they destroy religion, why they go into Mosul and destroy all the statues. The idea is I'm going to own the future. I can't own the future in the present unless I destroy the past," he said.

"The communists understood this. Pol Pot said in 1975, 'this is the year zero.' So everything that came before us, we're going to wipe out … creating this new totalitarian society.

"People have to understand it's not just sectarian conventional warfare. We're dealing with an apocalyptic regime which is fueled by violence and they'll stop at absolutely nothing."

Donohue also chastised House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a California Republican, for saying the Netanyahu speech put her "near tears" for its "insult to the intelligence" of the United States.

"She's a fellow Catholic and she's a disgrace as far as I'm concerned. I would lay anchor with Bibi and his people not just simply because Israel's important, but because he's also honest," Donohue said.

"Everything he said, I'd love to see a rebuttal from the other side. Where is he wrong? I don't think he was wrong on anything."

Donohue's New York City-based group, founded in 1973, is the nation’s largest Catholic civil-rights organization. Its defined goal is working to "safeguard both the religious freedom rights and the free speech rights of Catholics whenever and wherever they are threatened."
