Betsy McCaughey: Justice Dept. 'Jumping the Gun' on Balt. Probe

By    |   Friday, 08 May 2015 10:00 PM

The Justice Department is "jumping the gun" with its investigation of the Baltimore Police Department – just as it did in Ferguson, Missouri, after the police shooting death of Michael Brown, says Betsy McCaughey, former lieutenant governor of New York.

In a panel discussion led by "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth on Newsmax TV on Friday night, McCaughey slammed the Obama administration for sending no representatives to the Friday funeral of New York City police officer Brian Moore, the fifth officer shot in the line of duty in the United States in five months.

"There should be demonstrations, marches and ceremonies protesting the carnage against our police force," she said. "Instead, no investigations at all, really, and we see the Justice Department once again jumping the gun … as they did in Ferguson, and going into [Baltimore] with the assumption that things are being done incorrectly rather than with an open mind."

Attorney General Loretta Lynn announced that the Justice Department would probe the Baltimore police department in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray, a suspect who died of injuries he suffered while in police custody.

Newsmax contributor and political analyst Larry Elder said it's no surprise that the deadly confrontations between police and black suspects that have triggered riots and demonstrations come as a shock to the public.

"Remember that line from the movie 'A Few Good Men?' – 'You can't handle the truth'?" Elder said. "People don't want to know … that [police suspects] go limp the way Freddie Gray did, that they often say things like, 'I can't breathe.'

"That's the reality … and so, if you want to go into Baltimore and find something wrong with the [police department], you'll find it, but that will not make people in Baltimore safer."

Elder said the irony of the investigation of the Baltimore Police Department is that it, unlike the Ferguson Police Department, is diverse.

"In Ferguson you can at least make the argument that the people there lack political power," he said. "You can't do that in Baltimore," where the police department is 40 percent black.

"So, if these people are engaging in brutality and racially profiling, then why demonstrate over the failure of Ferguson to have a diverse police force?" he asked. "What you're really saying is once you put on the blue and put on the badge, you become a pariah."
